Does epilepsy cause fainting?

A faint usually happens when blood flow to the brain briefly falls. It may follow standing for a long time, heat, pain, fear, dehydration or a medical problem. The person often feels light-headed, sweaty or nauseated before briefly losing awareness and then recovering.

Epilepsy can cause seizures that affect awareness, movement or sensation. Some seizures can look like a faint, particularly when there is little movement. Details such as what happened before the event, eye position, movements, colour change, recovery time and confusion afterwards help a clinician tell the possibilities apart. A witness account or phone recording can be useful if obtained safely.

Help the person lie flat and protect them from injury. Do not give food or drink until they are fully alert, and do not restrain jerking movements. Record the duration, warning symptoms, movements and recovery, then arrange medical assessment, especially after a first unexplained event. Until the cause is clear, ask a clinician about driving, bathing alone, heights and swimming.

Call emergency services if the person does not regain normal breathing or awareness, has repeated episodes without recovering, is seriously injured, is pregnant, or has a seizure-like event lasting several minutes. Urgent assessment is also needed for new weakness, severe headache, chest pain or persistent confusion.

Ask whether the event sounded more like fainting or a seizure, which tests may help, what a witness should record, and which activities should be avoided while you are being assessed.
