Does endometriosis cause ovulation pain?

Endometriosis is tissue similar to the womb lining growing outside the womb. Around ovulation, changing hormones and activity in the pelvis can aggravate endometriosis-related inflammation. Pain may be on one side, in the lower abdomen, or deeper in the pelvis, and it may occur with painful periods, pain during sex, bowel symptoms, or difficulty becoming pregnant.

Mid-cycle pain can also occur without endometriosis. The timing, duration, severity, and other symptoms help a clinician consider possibilities such as an ovarian cyst or another pelvic condition. A symptom pattern is useful, but it is not a diagnosis by itself.

Track when the pain starts in relation to your cycle, where you feel it, how long it lasts, and whether bleeding, discharge, bowel changes, urinary symptoms, or pain during sex occur. A clinician may examine you and decide whether ultrasound or other assessment is appropriate.

For recurring pain, discuss options that fit your pregnancy plans. Depending on the assessment, care may include pain relief, hormonal treatment, or specialist review.

Arrange medical care for new, recurrent, or worsening ovulation pain, especially when it interferes with daily activity. Seek urgent help for sudden severe pain, fainting, fever, vomiting, heavy bleeding, or pain during a possible pregnancy.
