Does endometrial hyperplasia cause bleeding after menopause?

Endometrial hyperplasia is an overgrowth of the womb lining. The lining can become uneven and shed, causing spotting or bleeding even after periods have stopped. Bleeding after menopause can also come from thin vaginal tissues, polyps, hormone therapy, infection, or womb cancer. The symptom cannot distinguish between these causes, and a small amount still warrants a clinical check.

Contact a doctor or gynaecologist promptly about any bleeding after menopause. Record when it happened, how much blood there was, its colour, and whether pain or discharge occurred. Mention hormone medicines, tamoxifen, and other prescribed or non-prescribed products. Your assessment may include an examination, ultrasound, and womb-lining sampling.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe weakness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or shortness of breath. If symptoms are light and you feel stable, still arrange prompt medical review rather than waiting for the bleeding to recur.

Ask what may be causing the bleeding, whether the womb lining needs sampling, and what the scan can show. Ask whether the result is simple or atypical hyperplasia, what follow-up is needed, and how treatment relates to fertility and contraception.
