Does endometrial ablation treat adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. Ablation removes or destroys the lining inside the womb, so it can lessen menstrual bleeding. It does not reach all of the tissue embedded in the muscle. Pain, pressure, or a bulky uterus may therefore continue, and bleeding can return. The result depends on how extensive the adenomyosis is and whether other causes of bleeding are present.

A gynaecologist can assess your symptoms, examination findings, and imaging before discussing ablation. Tell them whether pain, fertility plans, or bleeding is your main concern. Options may include medicines, a hormonal intrauterine system, or surgery directed at the uterus, depending on your circumstances. Endometrial ablation is not suitable when a future pregnancy is planned; discuss contraception and pregnancy risks before treatment.

Arrange medical review for bleeding that is becoming heavier, pain that limits daily activities, or tiredness that may reflect anaemia. Seek urgent help for bleeding that makes you faint or dizzy, severe worsening pelvic pain, fever, or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding.

Ask whether your symptoms fit adenomyosis, what ablation can and cannot address, and which alternatives match your priorities. Ask how treatment may affect pain, future pregnancy, contraception, and the chance that symptoms will need further treatment.
