Does emollient therapy treat sunburn?

Sunburn is an inflammatory reaction after too much ultraviolet exposure. The affected skin may feel hot, tender, tight, itchy, or later begin to peel. A bland emollient helps reduce water loss and friction as the surface barrier recovers. It supports comfort rather than removing the burn. Avoid applying thick, heavily fragranced products to very hot skin, because they may irritate it or trap heat.

Move out of direct sun, cool the skin with a lukewarm shower or cool damp cloth, and drink fluids according to your usual needs. Once the skin has cooled, apply a fragrance-free moisturiser gently and leave peeling skin alone. Wear loose clothing and protect the area from further sun. Do not break blisters; they help shield damaged skin while it heals.

Get medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or signs of dehydration. Urgent care is appropriate for severe symptoms, burns involving the eyes or face, or a person who is very young, frail, or unable to drink.
