Does emollient therapy treat pityriasis alba?

Pityriasis alba causes pale, sometimes slightly scaly patches, commonly on a child's face. The patches can be easier to notice after sun exposure because nearby skin becomes darker, while the affected areas do not tan in the same way. Dryness and mild itch may accompany the colour change. An emollient reduces surface dryness and can make fine scale less visible, but it does not immediately restore pigment. A clinician can distinguish this pattern from fungal infection, eczema or other causes of light patches.

Use a bland, fragrance-free emollient on the patches and surrounding dry skin as directed. Apply after a gentle wash, patting rather than rubbing the face. Protect exposed skin from strong sun with shade, clothing and age-appropriate sunscreen, because tanning around a pale patch can increase contrast. Avoid bleaching products, harsh exfoliants and steroid creams unless prescribed. Keep a simple record of changes in scale, itch and patch borders so a clinician can review progress.

Arrange an examination if patches are sharply ring-shaped, rapidly expanding, intensely itchy, painful, wet or crusted, or if hair or eyelashes are affected. Seek advice when the diagnosis is uncertain, the areas appear on many body sites, or the colour change persists without improvement. A new or changing patch deserves review rather than repeated self-treatment.
