Does emollient therapy treat baby acne?

Baby acne, also called neonatal cephalic pustulosis, can appear as small red bumps or pustules on a newborn's face. It is different from dry, irritated skin: applying a thick or fragranced product over spots may trap heat or irritate delicate skin. Emollients are moisturising products, so their role is to support a dry skin barrier rather than treat the acne itself. A newborn's rash can resemble several other conditions, making the pattern, timing and the baby's overall health relevant to an assessment.

Clean the face gently with lukewarm water and pat it dry. Avoid scrubbing, squeezing, acne medicines intended for older children or adults, essential oils and heavily fragranced creams unless a healthcare professional specifically advises them. Keep saliva, milk and sweat from sitting on the skin, and change damp clothing or bibs. If the surrounding skin is genuinely dry, ask whether a thin layer of a bland, fragrance-free emollient is suitable and apply only as directed.

Seek prompt medical advice if a newborn has fever, seems unusually sleepy, feeds poorly, breathes differently, or has a rash with blisters, extensive peeling, bruising or rapidly spreading redness. Arrange a review if spots are worsening, crusting or accompanied by swelling, or if you are unsure whether the rash is baby acne. Do not rely on moisturiser to assess a new rash in an unwell infant.

Ask whether the rash is consistent with baby acne, whether any emollient is needed for dry surrounding skin, and which ingredients or products should be avoided on your newborn's face.
