Does emollient therapy treat ichthyosis?

Ichthyosis causes persistently dry, thick or fish-scale-like skin because the outer layer does not shed and retain moisture in the usual way. An emollient fills gaps between surface cells and forms a protective layer, so skin may feel more flexible and less tight. The effect is supportive: inherited forms of ichthyosis need ongoing skin care, and symptoms can return when moisturising stops. A clinician may suggest a product texture suited to the body area and the amount of scale.

Apply the recommended emollient soon after a short lukewarm wash, while the skin is still slightly damp. Smooth it on gently rather than scrubbing or peeling scale. Reapply when the skin feels tight, especially over areas that crack or become rough. Avoid fragranced products if they sting or irritate. Keep the container and hands clean, and take care because ointments can make floors and bath surfaces slippery. A dermatologist may add a scale-softening treatment when moisturising alone is not enough.

Arrange medical advice if cracks bleed, ooze, become increasingly painful, or develop spreading redness, warmth or swelling. Seek prompt care for fever, marked weakness, or difficulty keeping an infant warm or hydrated. A review is also useful when itching disrupts sleep, the skin-care routine is difficult to follow, or the diagnosis has not been confirmed.
