Does emollient therapy treat asteatotic eczema?

Asteatotic eczema develops when very dry skin becomes irritated and cracked, often on the lower legs or other dry areas. The surface may look like a network of fine cracks and can itch or sting. Emollients replace some of the lost surface oils, reduce water loss and help the skin move without splitting. Regular use can support control between flares, but active inflammation may cause redness and intense itch that needs a clinician's treatment plan. Use a rich, fragrance-free emollient several times through the day, especially after a short lukewarm wash. Apply by smoothing over the skin rather than rubbing cracked areas. Avoid fragranced washes, vigorous scrubbing and very hot water. Continue moisturising when the skin feels better because stopping as soon as symptoms ease can allow dryness to return. Arrange an appointment if the rash is new, widespread, very itchy, repeatedly cracking or not improving with regular emollient use. Seek prompt care for pus, spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe pain, fever or rapidly worsening inflammation.
