Does emollient therapy help with scaly skin?

Scaling means that outer skin cells are becoming more visible as they build up or shed. When dryness is contributing, an emollient loosens some surface roughness, traps moisture and makes the skin less likely to split with movement. This can make flakes less noticeable and reduce tightness. Scaling can also occur with eczema, psoriasis, fungal infection, contact irritation or other conditions, so improvement with moisturiser does not by itself identify the cause. Avoid scraping or peeling scale, which can injure the skin underneath.

Apply a fragrance-free emollient after bathing and again when the skin feels dry. Use lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser and a soft towel; pat rather than rub. Spread the product over the scaly area without force. If scaling is thick, painful, itchy or confined to a particular pattern, arrange advice before adding exfoliating products. Arrange a review if scaling persists, spreads, returns frequently or does not settle with gentle moisturising. Seek prompt care for marked redness, warmth, swelling, pain, pus, fever, blisters, or scaling near the eyes. A clinician may need to distinguish simple dryness from inflammation, infection or a condition requiring targeted treatment.

Ask what may be causing the scale, whether your current cleanser or product is irritating the skin, which emollient texture to use, and whether a medicated treatment or testing is appropriate.
