Does ectopic pregnancy cause pelvic pain?

An ectopic pregnancy grows outside the womb, commonly in a fallopian tube. Stretching and irritation in that area can produce pain low in the abdomen or pelvis. It may be more noticeable on one side, come and go, or become persistent. Some people also have vaginal bleeding, pain at the tip of the shoulder, dizziness, or faintness.

Pelvic pain does not identify the cause by itself. Urinary problems, bowel symptoms, normal changes of pregnancy, miscarriage, and other gynaecological conditions can also cause discomfort. A clinician may combine an examination with pregnancy hormone testing and ultrasound.

If pregnancy is possible and you have new pelvic pain, contact a healthcare professional promptly, especially if the pain is one-sided or accompanied by bleeding. Explain its location, severity, timing, and whether movement makes it worse. Avoid driving if you are dizzy, faint, or increasingly unwell.

Seek emergency care immediately for sudden severe pain, pain that is getting worse, fainting, pronounced dizziness, heavy bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, pale or clammy skin, or breathing difficulty. Internal bleeding can occur with an ectopic pregnancy and cannot be assessed safely at home.
