Does Dupuytren's Contracture Cause Finger Stiffness?

Short answer
Finger Stiffness is a common presentation of Dupuy's Contracture. Thickened tissue in the palm can form a tight cord that gradually pulls a finger toward the palm, limiting straightening.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Gradual difficulty straightening a finger, sometimes with a firm palm lump or cord.
- Assessment
- A physical examination usually focuses on palm thickening and finger movement.
- Practical tip
- Avoid forceful stretching and arrange assessment if hand function is changing.
What the stiffness can mean
Dupuytren's Contracture affects connective tissue beneath the skin of the palm. A firm lump or rope-like band may develop, often near the ring or little finger. The skin can look puckered, and placing the hand flat on a table may become difficult. Stiffness may be more noticeable when you try to open the hand fully than when you make a fist. It can progress gradually, but the pattern and pace vary between people. Pain is not required for the condition to limit movement.
Finger stiffness can also arise from joint arthritis, a tendon problem, an old injury, swelling, or nerve irritation. A clinician examines the palm, checks active finger movement, and compares both hands to help distinguish these causes.
What you can do next
Arrange a non-urgent assessment if stiffness persists, worsens, or interferes with washing, dressing, typing, gripping, or other daily tasks. Note which finger is affected, when the change began, whether a palm lump or skin dimpling is present, and whether the finger can still be straightened. Do not forcefully pull a contracted finger straight, because this may irritate the tissues. A hand specialist or physiotherapist can discuss observation, hand exercises suited to your movement, and treatment options when function is becoming limited.
When to seek care promptly
Seek prompt medical advice for sudden stiffness after an injury, marked swelling, redness, warmth, severe pain, a blue or pale finger, new numbness, or a finger that cannot move. These features can point to an injury, infection, circulation problem, or nerve issue rather than the gradual pattern associated with Dupuytren's Contracture. Contact emergency services for a hand that becomes suddenly cold, pale, or severely painful.
Questions for your doctor
You could ask: Is the reduced movement coming from a palm cord, the finger joint, or another structure? How much straightening is currently limited? Which activities should I modify, and which exercises are appropriate? What changes would mean it is time to review treatment?

Questions people ask
Does Dupuytren's Contracture affect every finger?
No. It can involve one or more fingers, with the ring and little fingers commonly affected, and the pattern differs between people.
Can finger stiffness be present without pain?
Yes. Dupuytren's Contracture may limit straightening through palm thickening and tightening even when pain is absent.
Should I stretch a stiff finger forcefully?
No. Use only gentle movement advised for your situation and seek assessment if the finger is becoming harder to straighten.
