Does diverticular disease cause abdominal pain?

Diverticular disease involves small pouches in the bowel wall. When these pouches are associated with symptoms, discomfort may be felt in the lower abdomen and may come with bloating or a change in bowel habit. Diverticulitis is inflammation or infection involving a pouch and can cause more persistent pain, fever, nausea, or tenderness.

The location, duration, severity, bowel changes, and examination findings help distinguish diverticular symptoms from other causes. Pain alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may ask about previous episodes, medicines, constipation, bleeding, and family history before deciding whether tests are needed.

Arrange medical advice if pain is new, persistent, or interfering with eating or daily activity. Keep a brief record of when it starts, where it is felt, bowel changes, fever, and any blood. Drink fluids if you can, follow advice about fibre or other bowel changes, and avoid taking anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician says they are suitable for you.

Seek urgent assessment for severe or steadily worsening pain, fever with tenderness, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, fainting, or significant bleeding. Emergency help is appropriate for collapse, confusion, or severe weakness. These features may signal a complication or another urgent abdominal problem.
