Does distal radius fracture cause visible deformity after injury?

Visible Deformity After Injury is a very common presentation of Distal Radius Fracture. A break near the wrist may shift the bone position, making the wrist look bent, shortened or unusually angled after a fall or blow.

The appearance can reflect swelling, bone displacement or both. The wrist may be painful, bruised and difficult to move, but appearance alone cannot show the full injury. Some fractures have little visible change, so a normal-looking wrist does not exclude a break after a significant injury. Clinicians assess circulation, sensation and finger movement before arranging imaging and deciding how to support the wrist.

Support the injured arm in the position found and avoid trying to straighten the wrist. Remove rings or tight jewellery early if this can be done without moving the injury, because swelling may increase. Keep the hand elevated and cover any wound with a clean dressing. Do not eat or drink until you have received local medical advice, as some injuries may need a procedure.

Visible deformity after an injury warrants urgent medical assessment. Call emergency services or attend an emergency department if the fingers are numb, pale, blue or cold, pain is severe, there is heavy bleeding or bone through the skin, or finger movement is lost. Keep checking finger colour and sensation while waiting for help.
