Does diagnostic laparoscopy treat chronic pelvic pain?

Laparoscopy is keyhole surgery using a camera through small abdominal incisions. It can help the surgical team inspect the pelvis for findings such as endometriosis, adhesions, ovarian cysts, or other visible abnormalities. If a treatable finding is identified and consent and planning allow it, the surgeon may remove endometriosis, divide adhesions, or manage a cyst during the same operation.

Pain can also come from muscles, nerves, the bladder, bowel, or several overlapping causes that laparoscopy cannot see or correct. A normal-looking pelvis does not make the pain imaginary; it may redirect evaluation toward non-surgical causes and a broader pain plan.

Before deciding, discuss what the operation is intended to diagnose and what treatment could be performed if a finding appears. Share your pain pattern, previous operations, bowel or bladder symptoms, cycle relationship, and current medicines. Ask about recovery, activity limits, and alternatives such as pelvic physiotherapy or medication when appropriate. Plan follow-up to review findings and the next step.

After laparoscopy, contact the surgical team for fever, increasing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, wound redness or drainage, painful urination, or bleeding that concerns you. Seek urgent care for fainting, severe breathlessness, chest pain, a swollen painful leg, or severe worsening pain. New sudden pelvic pain before a planned assessment also needs prompt medical review.
