Does diabetes education programme treat type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes happens when the body makes little or no insulin, so prescribed insulin remains a core part of treatment. Education helps you understand glucose checks, insulin delivery, meal planning, carbohydrate amounts, physical activity and sick-day decisions.

You can also learn to recognise both low and high glucose, check equipment, rotate injection sites when relevant, and prepare for travel or changes in routine. The right programme is adapted to your age, medicines, work, activity and confidence.

Bring your glucose records, insulin list and questions to teaching sessions. Practise matching your agreed insulin plan with meals and activity; never omit prescribed basal insulin without urgent clinical advice. Keep supplies available, and make sure family, friends or colleagues know how to respond if you become confused or cannot treat yourself.

A diabetes educator can help you make a written plan for exercise, vomiting, fever, travel and device problems. Your plan should say when to check glucose or ketones if your clinician has advised this, and whom to contact.

Get urgent medical help for severe low glucose, repeated vomiting, worsening drowsiness, trouble breathing, severe dehydration or glucose that remains high despite your agreed correction plan. Contact your diabetes team when readings change repeatedly, insulin supplies or devices fail, or you are unsure how to manage illness.

Ask what your insulin plan means at meals and bedtime, how to handle exercise and illness, which monitoring tools suit you, and when an educator should review your technique.
