Can dermatofibroma cause skin lumps?

Most people with Dermatofibroma notice skin lumps as firm, small bumps within the skin. They often feel tethered or dimple slightly when pinched, and commonly occur on the legs, although other sites are possible.

A dermatofibroma is a usually non-cancerous fibrous skin growth. It may be tan, pink, brown, or darker than the surrounding skin, particularly in deeper skin tones. The surface can be smooth or slightly scaly, and mild tenderness or itch may occur after rubbing. Its colour and firmness can change gradually. Because many different conditions can cause a lump, appearance alone is not enough to confirm the diagnosis.

Avoid repeatedly squeezing, cutting, or scraping the area, since this can injure the skin and make assessment harder. Photograph the lump beside a familiar object and note changes in size, colour, texture, bleeding, or symptoms. A clinician can examine it and may recommend observation when it has a typical stable appearance. Removal may be considered when it catches on clothing, remains painful, or causes significant concern, but a scar can result.

Arrange an assessment for a lump that is rapidly changing, repeatedly bleeding, ulcerated, persistently painful, unusually firm, or different from your other spots. Seek earlier review if it appears after an injury and does not settle, or if you are unsure whether it is a dermatofibroma.
