Can dermal fillers treat atrophic scars?

Atrophic scars are areas where the skin has lost volume or sits below the surrounding surface. A filler may be placed beneath a suitable depression to provide support and reduce the visible shadow. A clinician must first distinguish a soft rolling scar from a sharply edged boxcar scar or a narrow ice-pick scar, because each has different structural needs.

Filler changes the contour rather than rebuilding normal scarred skin. The correction can be uneven, and the material may gradually be absorbed. It will not treat redness, brown marks, active acne, or a scar that is tethered deep below the surface unless the treatment plan addresses those features separately.

Have the scar examined by a qualified dermatologist or medical injector. Bring details of previous procedures, cold sores, allergies, medicines, pregnancy plans, and any history of prolonged swelling or unusual scarring.
