Short answer

Unintentional Weight Loss is a common presentation of Depression, although reduced appetite, physical illness, medicines and other causes must also be considered.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible mechanism
Low appetite and reduced motivation can make regular meals difficult.
Useful record

Urgent concern
Fainting, confusion or inability to keep fluids needs prompt care.

Why depression may reduce weight

Depression can blunt appetite and make food less enjoyable. Low energy may make shopping or preparing meals feel difficult, while anxiety, nausea, poor sleep or loss of interest can further disrupt eating. Some people eat less without noticing the change until clothes fit differently or others comment.

Unintentional weight loss has many possible explanations, including digestive disease, thyroid problems, infection, dental difficulty, medication effects and other illnesses. The meaning depends on the pattern: appetite, thirst, bowel changes, pain, swallowing, mood and the speed of change all matter.

What you can do now

Arrange a primary-care appointment if weight is falling without an intended change, especially with low mood, tiredness or reduced appetite. Keep notes on meals, symptoms, medicines and activity. Small regular meals, nourishing snacks and help with shopping or cooking can be useful while you wait, if eating feels manageable.

Avoid relying on supplements or forcing large meals without advice. A clinician can examine you, review medicines and decide whether tests or dietetic support are appropriate. Depression treatment may improve appetite and daily functioning when it is part of the cause.

When to get urgent help

Seek prompt care for inability to keep fluids down, fainting, severe weakness, confusion, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or difficulty swallowing. Get urgent mental-health support for suicidal thoughts, self-harm urges or inability to care for yourself. Rapidly worsening loss should be assessed without delay.
