Does dengue fever cause joint pain?

Dengue may cause pain in several joints during a feverish illness. The discomfort can appear alongside muscle aches, headache, exhaustion, nausea, or a rash. Pain intensity and location can vary, and similar symptoms occur with other viral illnesses and inflammatory conditions.

A clinician looks at the whole illness, including fever timing, recent travel or mosquito exposure, hydration, examination findings, and any bleeding symptoms. Do not use joint pain alone to decide that you have dengue.

Rest the painful joints, avoid strenuous exercise, and take regular fluids if you can keep them down. Paracetamol can be an option for pain when it is safe for you and taken as directed. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless a clinician tells you to use them.

Contact a healthcare professional if joint pain comes with fever, becomes difficult to manage, or follows travel to an area where dengue occurs. Share your medicines and any history of bleeding or liver disease.

Get urgent care for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, fainting, confusion, trouble breathing, marked weakness, or very little urine. Urgent review is also needed if you cannot drink or your condition worsens as the fever changes.
