Does dengue fever cause headache?

Dengue can cause a strong headache during a febrile illness. It may occur with fever, marked tiredness, nausea, skin changes, or aches in the muscles and joints. These features overlap with other infections, so a headache does not establish dengue by itself.

If dengue is possible because of local transmission or recent travel, a clinician can assess the full pattern, timing, examination findings, and whether testing is appropriate. Avoid taking aspirin or ibuprofen until a clinician has advised you, because dengue can involve bleeding risk.

Rest, drink fluids in small frequent amounts, and keep a note of your temperature and other symptoms. Paracetamol may be suitable for fever or pain when used according to the package directions and your clinician's advice. Do not combine products that contain paracetamol.

Arrange medical advice if fever and headache are significant, persist, or follow possible mosquito exposure. Tell the clinician about travel, medicines, bleeding, vomiting, and reduced urination.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening headache, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, black stools, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, extreme weakness, or inability to drink. These signs need prompt assessment during a possible dengue illness.
