Does dengue cause loss of taste?

Taste depends partly on smell, saliva, the mouth, and the nervous system. Fever, a dry mouth, reduced appetite, nasal blockage, or medicines can make food seem bland during an illness. A person may also describe reduced taste when the main change is reduced smell.

Loss of taste has many possible explanations. A recent respiratory illness such as the common cold or COVID-19 can affect smell and taste; some people experience symptoms that continue after the initial infection. The pattern, timing, and other symptoms help a clinician decide what needs checking.

Arrange medical advice if the change is marked, lasts beyond the illness, keeps returning, or affects eating and drinking.
