Does deep vein thrombosis cause swollen ankles?

A deep vein thrombosis is a clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg. It can slow blood flow and lead to swelling, aching, warmth, or skin colour change. Swelling may involve the calf, ankle, or whole leg and can be more noticeable on one side. Ankle swelling also has many other possible causes, so its appearance alone cannot identify a clot.

New swelling on one side, particularly with pain or warmth, should be assessed promptly by a healthcare professional. Explain when it began and mention recent surgery, prolonged travel or bed rest, pregnancy, hormone medicines, cancer, or a previous clot if relevant. Do not massage the swollen area or delay assessment while waiting for it to improve.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, or a rapid heartbeat with leg swelling. These symptoms can indicate that a clot has travelled to the lungs. Without chest symptoms, urgent same-day medical assessment is still appropriate for unexplained one-sided swelling or pain.

Ask whether your swelling needs urgent testing, what other causes should be considered, and which symptoms require emergency help. Tell the clinician about medicines, recent immobility, procedures, pregnancy, or any history of clots.
