De Quervain's tenosynovitis affects tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Swelling and a tight tendon sheath can make gripping, lifting or moving the thumb painful. During a release, the surgeon makes a small opening in the sheath so the tendons can glide with less restriction. The procedure addresses the narrowed covering; it does not instantly restore strength or remove all soreness.
