Does skin yeast infection cause itchy skin?

Cutaneous candidiasis is an overgrowth of Candida yeast on the skin. It often affects warm, damp folds such as the groin, underarms, or beneath the breasts. The area may look red and feel sore, raw, or itchy. Small spots can appear around the main rash. Itching reflects irritation and inflammation, but itching by itself cannot identify the cause.

A clinician may consider the rash location, its borders, moisture exposure, recent medicines, and other health factors. Eczema, contact irritation, and several other infections can produce similar symptoms.

Keep the affected area gently clean and dry. Pat rather than rub after washing, choose loose breathable clothing, and change out of damp clothes promptly. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, and sharing towels until the cause is clearer. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antifungal treatment is suitable and how long to use it. Do not apply steroid cream alone to a suspected yeast rash without advice, because it can alter the appearance and allow an infection to persist.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returning, very painful, cracked, or producing drainage. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing redness, marked swelling, or feeling generally unwell. Assessment is also sensible when itching continues despite simple skin care or when the diagnosis is uncertain.
