Can custom orthotics treat Morton's neuroma?

Morton's neuroma causes irritation around a nerve between the toes, often producing burning pain, tingling, or the feeling of a pebble beneath the foot. An orthotic can include a metatarsal pad or contour that changes how force passes through the ball of the foot. The pad must be positioned correctly; a poorly placed device can increase pressure rather than relieve it.

Choose shoes with a wide toe box, a comfortable upper, and enough space for the insert. A clinician can examine the forefoot and decide whether custom support is suitable. Increase wear gradually, check the skin after use, and stop if numbness, blistering, or sharper forefoot pain develops. Activity changes and other treatments may also be needed.

Seek assessment for persistent forefoot pain, progressive tingling, weakness, or difficulty walking. Get urgent care after an injury with severe swelling, deformity, or inability to bear weight. A review is also sensible when symptoms do not improve with roomier shoes and the prescribed device.

Ask which space between the toes is affected, whether a metatarsal pad is appropriate, and how the orthotic should sit inside your shoe. Ask what wearing schedule to follow and what alternatives are available if pressure symptoms continue.
