Does custom orthotics treat bunions?

A bunion changes the shape and loading of the front of the foot. An orthotic may support the arch, spread pressure beneath the forefoot, or reduce rubbing inside a shoe when its design matches your foot. That can make walking or standing more comfortable for some people. It cannot reverse the bony alignment. Wide, comfortable footwear is often just as relevant as the insert, because a narrow toe box can press directly on the bunion.

Have the foot examined if the bunion is painful, changing, or making shoes difficult to wear. Take your usual shoes to the appointment so fit and pressure can be considered together. Choose a broad toe box and avoid footwear that squeezes the toes. A clinician may recommend an orthotic, padding, exercises, or activity changes based on the joint and skin findings. Introduce any new device gradually and check daily for rubbing, blisters, or pressure marks.

Seek prompt assessment if the area becomes hot, very red, rapidly swollen, or associated with fever. An open sore, spreading skin change, sudden inability to walk, or severe pain after an injury also needs timely care. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, or poor circulation should arrange earlier review for any skin breakdown around the foot.

Ask whether the pain comes from the bunion or another joint, which shoe features matter most, whether an orthotic could reduce pressure, and what to do if the deformity continues to interfere with walking.
