Does custom orthotics treat ankle osteoarthritis?

Ankle osteoarthritis can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced confidence on uneven ground. A custom insert may spread pressure through the foot or help accommodate an alignment pattern, making selected walking tasks more comfortable. Its effect varies with the joint changes, foot shape, footwear, and other conditions in the leg. The device manages forces around the joint; it does not restore worn cartilage or remove the underlying arthritis.

Ask for an assessment if ankle pain is limiting work, walking, or exercise. Bring your everyday shoes and describe which surfaces or movements trigger symptoms. The clinician may examine ankle motion, alignment, balance, and walking before deciding whether a custom design is worthwhile. Use it with an appropriate activity plan, strengthening or mobility work, and footwear that gives enough room. Increase wear gradually and report pressure points, skin changes, numbness, or greater joint pain.

Seek prompt care for a hot, red, rapidly swollen ankle, fever, a new injury with inability to bear weight, or sudden severe pain. A wound near the joint, new numbness, or a foot that becomes unusually pale or cold also needs urgent assessment. Review persistent symptoms when they increasingly restrict walking or daily tasks.
