Does custom orthotics help with arch pain?

Short answer
Custom orthotics may reduce arch pain by redistributing pressure and guiding foot movement, but they are not helpful for every cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Potential role
- Redistribute pressure and guide foot movement
- Fitting tip
- Use a shoe with enough room and introduce wear gradually
Why support may help
An orthotic sits inside the shoe and is shaped to the person’s foot and movement needs. It may spread load across the sole, reduce strain on sensitive tissues, or change how the foot rolls during walking. Arch pain can also result from overuse, footwear, a tendon problem, plantar fascia irritation, nerve symptoms, or an injury. An insert cannot diagnose these problems, and an overly rigid or poorly fitted device can create pressure in a new area.
Starting gradually
Have the foot and walking pattern assessed before choosing a custom device. Check that the orthotic fits the shoe without crowding the toes and follow the fitting plan you are given. Wear it for short periods at first, then increase use only if the foot remains comfortable. Supportive shoes, activity adjustment, calf and foot exercises, and weight-bearing changes may be part of the plan. Report rubbing, numbness, new pain, or worsening symptoms rather than pushing through them.
When to seek care
Seek assessment for arch pain after an injury, pain that changes your walking, swelling, bruising, or symptoms that persist despite reducing aggravating activity. Prompt review is especially sensible with numbness, weakness, a hot or red foot, or difficulty putting weight through it. Sudden severe pain or an obviously deformed foot needs urgent care.
Questions for your doctor
What is causing my arch pain? Would a custom device change the load in a useful way? How should I break it in, and which shoes should I use? When should the fit or treatment plan be reviewed?

Questions people ask
Should I wear custom orthotics all day immediately?
Usually, gradual use is more comfortable; follow the fitting instructions and report pressure or worsening pain.
Can orthotics fix every cause of arch pain?
No. Arch pain has different causes, and some need exercise, rest, medical treatment, or another approach.
