Does curettage and cautery treat pyogenic granuloma?

A pyogenic granuloma is a rapidly growing, delicate red growth that can bleed after minor contact. Curettage removes the visible tissue, and cautery treats the base to control bleeding and reduce the chance that tissue remains. The diagnosis should be checked before removal because other growths can resemble it. The clinician considers the growth's size, position, depth, and whether it has been injured. A sample may be sent for examination when the appearance is unusual or the diagnosis is not clear. Treatment can leave a healing area and sometimes a change in colour or texture.

Do not repeatedly rub, shave, or pick the growth. If it bleeds, apply steady gentle pressure with clean gauze and arrange an assessment. Tell the clinician about medicines that affect bleeding, pregnancy, allergies to local anaesthetic, and any history of raised scars. After the procedure, keep the site clean and covered as advised, and leave any crust in place. Avoid soaking or friction until the wound-care instructions allow it. Protect healed skin from strong sun to reduce persistent colour change.

Seek prompt care if bleeding does not settle with continuous gentle pressure, or if the area becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, or produces pus. Contact the clinic if the growth returns, the wound opens, or healing is delayed. A changing, dark, or unusual lesion deserves reassessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
