Does cubital tunnel syndrome cause weak grip?

The ulnar nerve travels behind the inner elbow and supplies feeling to part of the hand while helping control several small hand muscles. Pressure or repeated bending at the elbow may cause tingling in the ring and little fingers, clumsiness, or difficulty holding objects. Grip may feel weaker during tasks such as opening a jar, carrying a bag, or typing. These symptoms can have other causes, including problems in the wrist, neck, joints, or muscles, so the symptom alone cannot identify its source.

Notice when weakness appears and whether numbness, finger tingling, elbow discomfort, or dropping objects accompanies it. Until you are assessed, avoid leaning on the inner elbow and limit prolonged elbow flexion during sleep or phone use. A clinician may compare both hands, test sensation and muscle strength, and examine the neck and elbow. Treatment depends on the findings and may include activity changes, a night-time positioning strategy, physiotherapy, or further nerve evaluation.

Arrange a clinical assessment if grip weakness persists, interferes with work or daily tasks, or is accompanied by ongoing numbness. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening weakness, marked hand clumsiness, severe pain after an injury, or a hand that becomes unusually pale, blue, or cold. Sudden weakness affecting an entire arm or body side with speech or facial changes needs emergency attention.
