Does cryotherapy treat seborrheic keratosis?

Seborrheic keratoses are usually rough or waxy growths that can look as though they are stuck onto the skin. They may be tan, brown or darker and can become irritated by clothing or jewellery. Freezing damages the surface growth, which then flakes or crusts as the skin heals. Colour change can remain after treatment, particularly in more pigmented skin, and a thicker lesion may not clear fully with one session. A clinician may choose another removal method when a sample is needed or when the growth is very thick.

Arrange an examination if the growth is new, changing, itchy, bleeding or unlike your other spots. Once it has been identified as seborrheic keratosis, discuss whether removal is needed because of irritation, catching or appearance. Do not freeze a suspicious growth with a home product. After treatment, keep the area clean, avoid picking the crust and use the recommended protection while new skin forms.

Seek prompt assessment for a growth that changes quickly, develops uneven colour, repeatedly bleeds, forms an ulcer or becomes persistently painful. Contact the treating clinician if the treated site develops spreading redness, pus, fever or worsening swelling. A wound that is slow to heal also deserves review, especially if you have a condition or medicine that affects healing.

Ask how the growth was identified, whether a sample is needed, what mark or colour change may remain, and which removal method best fits its thickness and location.
