Does cryotherapy treat keloid scars?

A keloid is scar tissue that grows beyond the original wound and may feel firm, raised, itchy or tender. Freezing treatment uses cold to injure excess scar tissue so the area can gradually flatten or become less uncomfortable. Keloids can return after treatment, and a lighter or darker patch, blistering or temporary soreness may occur. The result depends on the scar's age, size, depth and position, as well as your tendency to form raised scars.

Have a dermatologist confirm that the raised area is a keloid before it is frozen, especially if it is changing or bleeding. Bring details of the original injury, piercing or operation and any earlier scar treatments. Ask whether cryotherapy alone or a combined plan is appropriate, and follow the wound-care instructions after each session. Do not freeze a suspected keloid at home.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if the scar grows quickly, becomes persistently painful, opens, bleeds, drains or develops marked redness and warmth. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, fever or severe swelling after treatment. These changes can signal infection or another skin problem rather than a routine treatment reaction.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, what flattening or symptom improvement is realistic, how the skin will be protected during freezing, and what alternatives may reduce the chance of the keloid returning.
