Does Crohn's disease cause abdominal pain?

Crohn's disease can cause ongoing or recurring inflammation in parts of the digestive tract. This may produce cramping, tenderness, or pain that comes in waves. The location and character can vary depending on which area is affected. Some people also notice diarrhoea, tiredness, reduced appetite, nausea, weight loss, or blood or mucus in the stool. Symptoms can become more noticeable during a flare and may ease when inflammation is controlled.

Abdominal pain has many possible causes, including infections, constipation, food intolerance, and other bowel conditions. Pain by itself cannot identify Crohn's disease. A clinician considers the pattern of pain alongside bowel changes, examination findings, and any relevant tests.

If pain is new, persistent, or interfering with daily activities, arrange an appointment with a doctor. Record when it starts, where it is, how long it lasts, what it feels like, and whether meals or bowel movements change it. Also note diarrhoea, fever, vomiting, blood in the stool, appetite changes, and medicines you take.

If you already have Crohn's disease, follow your prescribed treatment plan and tell your gastroenterology team about a new or worsening pattern. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. Ask before taking anti-inflammatory painkillers, because some can aggravate bowel symptoms; a clinician or pharmacist can help you choose a suitable option.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a swollen or rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, or heavy bleeding from the bowel. Prompt assessment is also needed if pain occurs with a high fever or if you cannot pass stool or gas. These features can signal a complication or another condition requiring timely treatment.
