Does contact dermatitis cause burning skin?

Irritant contact dermatitis can follow exposure to soaps, cleaning agents, solvents, sweat, friction, or repeated washing. Allergic contact dermatitis can follow a delayed reaction to ingredients such as fragrance, preservatives, metals, dyes, or plant material. The sensation may be burning, stinging, tenderness, or warmth, with redness, dryness, scaling, swelling, or cracks.

Burning may be strongest when skincare or water touches a damaged barrier. The symptom can also occur with sun injury, infection, medication reactions, or other inflammatory conditions, so the appearance and exposure history help guide assessment.

Stop suspected new products and gently remove residue with lukewarm water when appropriate. Apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser to intact skin and use cool compresses for short periods. Avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids, essential oils, and heat while the skin is reactive. Do not apply untested remedies to broken or blistered skin.

Record what touched the area, how quickly the burning began, and whether symptoms improve away from work, jewellery, footwear, or a particular product. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend suitable treatment after inspecting the skin.

Arrange an appointment if burning persists, recurs, spreads, interferes with sleep, or occurs without an identifiable exposure. Seek prompt help for worsening pain, pus, fever, marked swelling, or rapidly spreading redness. Emergency care is needed for breathing problems or swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat.
