Does contact dermatitis cause itchy skin?

Contact dermatitis happens when skin reacts after touching a substance. Irritant reactions may follow soaps, solvents, sweat, friction, or frequent washing. Allergic reactions can follow substances such as fragrance, preservatives, metals, dyes, or plant material. The affected area may itch, sting, redden, swell, scale, crack, or develop small fluid-filled bumps.

The rash often appears where exposure occurred, although allergic reactions can extend beyond that area. Timing can provide a clue: irritation may build with repeated contact, while an allergy may appear after a delay. Itchy skin also has many other possible causes, so the rash pattern and history are useful for diagnosis.

Stop or reduce contact with a suspected trigger and rinse the area gently if residue may remain. Use cool compresses, lukewarm showers, and a fragrance-free moisturiser on intact skin. Keep nails short and pat rather than rub after washing. Avoid adding several new creams at once, since extra ingredients can make the reaction harder to understand.

A pharmacist or clinician can recommend treatment based on the location, severity, and whether the skin is broken. Keep a simple record of new cosmetics, cleansers, jewellery, work materials, and medicines around the time symptoms began.

Arrange medical review when itching is severe, recurrent, widespread, disturbing sleep, or not improving after avoiding a suspected exposure. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, pain, pus, fever, or rapidly spreading redness. Emergency help is appropriate for breathing difficulty, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face.

Ask which exposure is most suspicious, whether the rash could be another condition, how to protect the skin barrier, and whether allergy testing is appropriate.
