Does cone biopsy treat cervical dysplasia?

Cervical dysplasia means abnormal cells are present on the surface of the cervix; it is not the same as invasive cervical cancer. During cone biopsy, a surgeon removes a cone-shaped sample that includes the transformation zone, where these changes often develop. The tissue is examined to confirm the diagnosis, assess the edges of the removed area, and check whether more treatment is needed. Less extensive changes may be monitored or treated with another method, while deeper or wider changes may make cone biopsy more suitable.

Ask your gynaecologist to explain the grade of dysplasia, why cone biopsy is being recommended, and how the result will change the plan. Tell the team if you may be pregnant, take medicines that affect bleeding, or hope to become pregnant, because cervical procedures can influence future pregnancy care. Keep every follow-up appointment so the cervix and any remaining abnormal cells can be checked.

Contact your care team urgently after the procedure if bleeding becomes heavy, you feel faint, or you develop severe pain, fever, or unpleasant-smelling discharge. Before treatment, seek prompt advice if you have new pelvic pain or bleeding that concerns you.

Ask what the biopsy is expected to remove, when the pathology result will be available, how margins affect follow-up, and what the plan means for future pregnancy.
