Does common cold cause loss of smell?

Smell depends on air carrying odour molecules into the upper part of the nose. During a cold, swollen nasal lining and thick mucus can limit that airflow, so foods may seem less flavourful as well. This temporary change may come with a blocked nose, runny nose, sneezing, or cough. A sudden or isolated loss of smell has other possible explanations, so consider the wider pattern and how the symptom changes over time.

Rest, drink regularly, and use saline spray or a saline rinse prepared as directed to ease nasal blockage. Avoid inserting objects into the nose and avoid smoke or strong irritants. Do not use decongestant sprays longer than the product instructions allow. Take care with hot food, steam, or spoiled food when smell is reduced because warning odours may be harder to notice.

Contact a clinician if smell does not begin to return as other cold symptoms improve, keeps changing, or occurs without nasal symptoms. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, severe headache with confusion, weakness, or symptoms after a head injury. Medical assessment is also sensible when repeated episodes interfere with eating or safety at home.
