Does common cold cause headache?

A blocked nose can create pressure around the forehead, cheeks or bridge of the nose, while coughing or straining can briefly intensify pain. Fever, poor sleep and not drinking enough can also make a headache more noticeable. Cold-related pain often occurs with nasal or throat symptoms, but the pattern differs from person to person. Headache has many possible causes, so associated symptoms and timing help guide assessment.

Rest in a quiet, comfortable room and drink fluids regularly. Saline nasal measures may ease congestion for some people. Avoid prolonged screen use if it worsens the pain, and keep meals regular when possible. Follow the label for any pain medicine and check with a pharmacist if you have liver, kidney, stomach or bleeding problems, take regular medicines, or are unsure which products can be combined. Do not exceed the stated dose.

Get urgent medical help for a sudden, extremely severe headache, new weakness, trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, a stiff neck, a new rash or repeated vomiting. Arrange medical advice when the headache is worsening, persists after the cold improves, follows a head injury, or is accompanied by vision changes or marked eye pain. A clinician can check whether another cause needs treatment.
