Does colorectal cancer screening treat ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation in the lining of the large bowel. Screening may involve examining that lining to look for abnormal areas or cellular changes. It is a monitoring process, not a treatment for pain, diarrhoea, bleeding, or active inflammation. If an area needs closer assessment, tissue may be sampled during the examination.

Continue the treatment plan prescribed for ulcerative colitis, even when screening is scheduled. Your gastroenterology team can explain the recommended timing based on how long you have had the condition, how much bowel is affected, and your previous findings. Tell the team about medicines, recent flares, and any change in symptoms before the appointment.

Contact your medical team promptly for frequent bloody diarrhoea, worsening abdominal pain, fever, dehydration, or marked weakness. Seek urgent help for severe pain, a swollen abdomen, persistent vomiting, fainting, or heavy bleeding.
