Does bowel cancer cause unexplained weight loss?

Bowel cancer may reduce weight by causing reduced appetite, early fullness, changes in bowel function, discomfort with eating, or increased demands on the body. Weight loss may appear with persistent fatigue, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, blood in the stool, or a feeling of incomplete emptying. Some people have few bowel symptoms, so an unexplained change in weight should be discussed even when digestion seems mostly normal.

Weight loss is not specific to cancer. Dental problems, thyroid disease, diabetes, infection, digestive disorders, medication effects, stress, and depression can also play a part. A clinician will consider the pace and pattern of change, appetite, diet, bowel symptoms, and general health.

Arrange a medical appointment if you are losing weight without trying, especially when the change continues or occurs with bowel symptoms. Keep a simple record of weight measurements, appetite, meals, bowel movements, pain, bleeding, and medicines. Do not rely on appetite alone to judge severity. The clinician may examine you and decide whether blood tests, stool checks, or further bowel evaluation are appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help if weight loss is accompanied by severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, confusion, marked weakness, heavy rectal bleeding, or black stool. These symptoms can signal dehydration, significant bleeding, or a bowel blockage and need prompt attention regardless of the underlying cause.
