Does bowel cancer cause persistent fatigue?

Bowel cancer can contribute to fatigue through ongoing illness, reduced intake, sleep disruption, or blood loss from the bowel. Blood loss may lead to iron-deficiency anaemia, which can make a person feel drained, short of breath with activity, dizzy, or less able to concentrate. Fatigue may continue even after a full night's sleep and can interfere with ordinary tasks.

Persistent fatigue is not specific to cancer. Anaemia from other causes, thyroid problems, infections, medication effects, low mood, and sleep disorders can also be responsible. A clinician will look at the full pattern rather than using tiredness alone to identify a cause.

Book a medical review when tiredness persists, is getting worse, or limits your usual activities. Describe when it began and whether rest helps. Mention breathlessness, dizziness, paleness, bowel changes, abdominal discomfort, rectal bleeding, appetite changes, or altered sleep. Do not start iron supplements without advice, because the cause of anaemia should be checked and treatment should match it.

Get urgent help for fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, confusion, sudden profound weakness, rapid worsening, or visible heavy rectal bleeding. Black, tarry stool with dizziness or weakness also needs prompt assessment. These signs can reflect serious bleeding or another urgent problem and should not be explained away as ordinary tiredness.
