Does bowel cancer cause persistent abdominal pain?

Bowel cancer may cause cramping, pressure, bloating, or a dull ache when a tumour changes how stool or gas moves through the bowel. Pain can be felt in different parts of the abdomen and may occur alongside a change in bowel habits, blood in the stool, or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied fully. These features do not confirm cancer; infections, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and other problems can produce similar symptoms.

A clinician considers the pattern, location, severity, and duration of pain together with your medical history. Examination and tests may be used to find the cause.

Arrange a medical appointment if abdominal pain continues, returns repeatedly, or is affecting eating, sleep, work, or daily activity. Note when it starts, where it is, what it feels like, and whether meals, bowel movements, or movement change it. Record related symptoms such as constipation, diarrhoea, bleeding, fever, vomiting, or reduced appetite. Bring a list of medicines and any bowel or family history that may help the clinician plan an assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a swollen or rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, heavy rectal bleeding, black stool, fainting, confusion, or marked weakness. These signs can indicate a bowel blockage, significant bleeding, or another condition needing prompt treatment, whether or not cancer is involved.
