Short answer

Fatigue is a common presentation of Coeliac Disease, but tiredness has many possible explanations.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why fatigue can happen

Coeliac disease can damage the small intestine after gluten exposure. Reduced absorption of iron, folate, vitamin B12 or other nutrients may contribute to anaemia or low energy. Ongoing inflammation, disrupted sleep and the effort of coping with digestive symptoms can also leave someone drained. Fatigue may continue even when bowel symptoms are mild, and it can vary from day to day. Tiredness on its own does not point to one diagnosis; sleep problems, mood changes, infections, thyroid disease and anaemia from other causes may feel similar.

A clinician can review your symptoms and may arrange blood tests, including checks related to coeliac disease and anaemia. If coeliac testing is being considered, ask before removing gluten from your diet because this may affect the assessment.

Steps that may help

Make an appointment if fatigue is persistent, interferes with work or daily activities, or occurs alongside bloating, diarrhoea or weight change. Record sleep, meals, activity, menstrual bleeding if relevant, and any medicines. Keep activity gentle and paced rather than pushing through exhaustion, and aim for regular meals and fluids. Do not take iron or high-dose supplements without advice; the right treatment depends on the cause and some supplements can cause harm or mask a problem.

When to seek care quickly

Seek urgent help for fatigue with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, one-sided weakness or a racing heartbeat that does not settle. Arrange prompt medical review for rapidly worsening exhaustion, black or bloody stools, ongoing vomiting, marked weight loss, or breathlessness with ordinary activity.

Questions to take along

Could coeliac disease or anaemia explain my fatigue? Which blood tests should be checked? Should I keep eating gluten before testing? Could my sleep, medicines or menstrual bleeding be contributing? When should I expect follow-up if the tests are normal?
