A CO2 laser removes or heats precisely measured layers of skin. During healing, the treated area produces new collagen and gradually becomes smoother. This can help some depressed or uneven acne scars, but it cannot erase every scar and may not address raised scars in the same way. Active acne, infection, recent tanning, a tendency to form thick scars, and some medicines can change the treatment choice or timing.

Have the scars assessed in person so the clinician can distinguish pits, rolling depressions, pigment changes, and raised tissue. Ask whether acne needs controlling first and whether a fractional or more intensive approach is appropriate. Follow the preparation plan, protect your skin from sun exposure, and disclose previous cold sores, poor wound healing, darker pigmentation after injury, and all medicines. After treatment, use only the recommended cleanser, ointment, and sun protection while the skin heals.

During recovery, contact the clinic for spreading redness, worsening pain, pus, fever, delayed healing, or blisters suggestive of a cold-sore outbreak. Urgent assessment is needed for facial swelling affecting vision or breathing. Do not pick peeling skin or apply unapproved active products, because irritation can prolong healing and increase colour change.
