Does cluster headache cause facial pain and pressure?

A cluster headache may cause piercing, burning, or deep pain around the eye, temple, cheek, or forehead. The affected eye may water or look red, and the nose on that side may become blocked or run. Some people feel restless during an attack rather than wanting to lie still.

Attacks tend to follow a recognisable pattern for the person, with episodes recurring over a period and then settling for a time. Facial pressure can resemble sinus discomfort, but congestion without the characteristic severe pain can have other explanations.

Seek a clinical assessment for new, severe, one-sided facial or eye pain, especially if attacks recur at similar times or include tearing, eye redness, or nasal symptoms on the painful side. Record the start time, duration, location, associated symptoms, and possible triggers.

Cluster headache needs a treatment plan made for rapid attacks and prevention. Ordinary pain medicines may not act quickly enough for some attacks. Follow the plan prescribed for you and do not borrow another person's headache medicine.

Get emergency help for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness, confusion, fainting, seizure, fever with a stiff neck, or vision loss. Urgent assessment is also needed for a painful red eye, a drooping eyelid that does not resolve, or facial pain after an injury.
