Do clinical trials treat metastatic cancer?

Metastatic cancer has spread from its original site to another part of the body. A trial may study treatment that circulates through the body, targets a tumour feature, supports the immune response, or combines established therapies in a different way. Other studies focus on pain, fatigue, appetite, movement, or communication so that care reflects your goals.

The study team may ask about the original cancer, sites of spread, previous treatments, scan findings, organ function, symptoms, and medicines. A trial can be considered alongside standard care, but the protocol determines exactly what is offered and monitored.

Ask your oncologist whether a trial matches the cancer's origin, molecular findings, current symptoms, and treatment history. Request a plain-language explanation of the purpose, schedule, expected monitoring, possible side effects, and other choices. Ask how the trial handles symptom relief and whether palliative care can continue alongside it.

Review travel, appointments, medication changes, and contact arrangements before signing consent. You may ask for time to consider the information and involve a trusted person in the discussion.

Contact your care team promptly for uncontrolled pain, new weakness or numbness, increasing breathlessness, persistent vomiting, inability to drink, confusion, or a fever during treatment. Seek emergency help for severe breathing trouble, collapse, sudden weakness, a seizure, or heavy bleeding. Use the trial's urgent contact route when a symptom changes quickly.

What is the trial trying to control, and does it match where my cancer began? What tests and visits are required? How will symptoms be treated during participation? What happens if the treatment does not help or I decide to stop?
