Does chronic disease review treat copd?

COPD care is usually ongoing because symptoms and exercise tolerance can vary. During a review, a clinician may ask about cough, phlegm, breathlessness, sleep, walking and recent flare-ups. They can check how you use inhalers, discuss smoking or other irritants, review vaccinations and consider pulmonary rehabilitation or further tests when suitable. The review helps organise care and recognise change; it is not emergency treatment for sudden severe breathlessness.

Bring every inhaler, a medicine list and details of any urgent visits or courses of treatment since your last review. Describe what you can do before becoming breathless and whether mucus has changed in colour or amount. Ask for a demonstration of inhaler technique and check that your written flare-up plan is clear. Avoid smoke and follow the agreed activity and breathing advice at a pace that feels safe.

Arrange an earlier assessment if breathlessness, cough or phlegm is increasing, daily activities are becoming harder, or your usual inhaler is less helpful. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting or chest pain. Sudden deterioration should be assessed promptly rather than saved for a routine appointment.

Ask whether your current inhalers are being used correctly, what changes count as a flare-up, how to pace activity, and whether rehabilitation, smoking support or additional testing could help. Confirm who to contact if your breathing worsens.
