Does childhood immunisation treat poliomyelitis?

Poliomyelitis is caused by poliovirus. Immunisation trains the immune system before exposure, reducing the chance of illness and helping limit spread. It cannot remove poliovirus after infection or repair nerve damage that has already occurred. A child with possible poliomyelitis needs medical assessment to evaluate weakness, movement, swallowing and breathing, with treatment and monitoring tailored to the findings.

Contact a clinician promptly if a child develops sudden weakness, difficulty walking, muscle pain, vomiting or fever after possible exposure. Keep the immunisation record available and mention missed doses, travel or contact with someone who may have been infected. Avoid close contact with stool or vomit and follow local infection-control advice while assessment is arranged.

Seek emergency help for new or worsening weakness, inability to stand or walk, trouble swallowing, choking, severe drowsiness or breathing difficulty. These symptoms can progress and require immediate evaluation. Do not rely on a vaccine dose to treat current neurological symptoms, and do not delay care while looking for an immunisation record.

Ask whether the symptoms need emergency assessment, which contacts should be informed, how hygiene precautions should be followed, and when missed immunisations can safely be reviewed.
