Does child health consultation treat failure to thrive?

Faltering growth means a child is not gaining weight or growing as expected. The clinician reviews the growth record over time rather than relying on one measurement. They may ask about feeding, vomiting, stools, appetite, sleep, activity, development and family circumstances, then examine the child for signs of illness or feeding difficulty.

Bring your child’s health records and a clear account of a typical day of feeds, meals and drinks. Note choking, coughing during feeds, vomiting, loose stools or prolonged mealtimes. Continue offering age-appropriate nutrition as advised, and avoid forcing feeds. The plan may involve feeding guidance, treatment of a medical problem or referral to another paediatric service.

Arrange prompt medical review if your child is losing weight, refusing most feeds, has repeated vomiting, shows dehydration such as very few wet nappies, or is unusually sleepy. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, collapse, severe weakness or a child who cannot keep fluids down.

Ask which growth measurements are concerning, what feeding changes are suitable for your child’s age, which symptoms should be recorded, and when progress will be checked again.
